Everyone deserves a strong body.

As a womxn who was late diagnosed with Autism and ADHD, exercise has become an important part of my routine for managing my symptoms. I often find myself inside my own head more than I am in my body due to rumination or sensory overload, and this can greatly increase my levels of anxiety.


Exercise is often recommended for its physical health benefits, but for neurodivergent womxn, it offers much more than just fitness. Many womxn with neurodivergence experience unique challenges related to sensory processing, emotional regulation, and executive functioning. Exercise can provide powerful support in these areas, improving quality of life in ways that go beyond the usual advice to "just move more." This post explores five specific benefits of exercise that neurodivergent womxn may find especially helpful.

  1. Improved Emotional Regulation and Stress Relief


Neurodivergent womxn often face heightened emotional responses and stress due to sensory overload or social pressures. Exercise acts as a natural mood regulator by releasing endorphins and reducing cortisol levels. Activities like walking, swimming, or yoga can calm the nervous system and help manage anxiety or mood swings.


For example, a 30-minute brisk walk outdoors can lower stress hormones and provide a mental break from overwhelming stimuli. Regular exercise creates a routine that offers predictability, which many neurodivergent individuals find comforting. This routine can reduce feelings of anxiety by providing a structured outlet for energy and emotions.

  1. Enhanced Focus and Cognitive Function


Many neurodivergent womxn struggle with attention and executive functioning. Exercise increases blood flow to the brain and stimulates the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which supports learning and memory. This boost can improve concentration and mental clarity.


In practice, short bursts of physical activity, such as jumping rope or dancing, can help reset focus during work or study sessions. Some womxn find that starting the day with exercise sets a positive tone, making it easier to organize tasks and maintain productivity. The key is finding enjoyable activities that feel energizing rather than draining.

  1. Better Sleep Quality


Sleep difficulties are common among neurodivergent individuals, often due to sensory sensitivities, hormonal changes, or irregular routines. Exercise can improve sleep by helping regulate the circadian rhythm and promoting deeper, more restorative sleep.


Engaging in moderate aerobic exercise like cycling, brisk walking, or swimming earlier in the day supports falling asleep faster and reduces nighttime awakenings. However, intense workouts close to bedtime might have the opposite effect, so timing matters. Establishing a consistent exercise schedule can reinforce healthy sleep patterns, which in turn support overall brain function and emotional health.


  1. Sensory Integration and Body Awareness


Many neurodivergent womxn experience sensory processing differences that make it hard to interpret or tolerate certain sensations. Exercise involving movement and proprioception, such as yoga, Pilates, or tai chi, can enhance body awareness and sensory integration.


These activities encourage mindful attention to how the body moves and feels, helping to reduce sensory overload and improve coordination. For example, practicing yoga poses slowly and with focus can ground the mind and ease sensory sensitivities. Over time, this can increase comfort in daily activities and reduce the frustration that comes from sensory challenges.
